Douglas Berger, M.D., Ph.D., an American doctor in Tokyo, is the Director of the Meguro Counseling Center, and a fully bilingual American board certified psychiatrist. Dr. Berger is a graduate of New York Medical College where he also completed a 4-year residency program in psychiatry. He has also completed a fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Now based in Tokyo, he had served on the Faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry in New York as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. Dr. Berger's Japanese qualifications include a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo School of Medicine (Registration No.11965), received for psychiatric research done while at the Tokyo University Department of Psychosomatic Medicine.
Dr. Berger works closely with a number of Japan-licensed physicians who can provide you with a prescription for medications recommended by Dr. Berger (the Japanese National Health Insurance will pay seventy-percent of the doctor and medication costs). He has considerable experience and knowledge on the use of psychiatric medications (anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications, etc.) and can provide you with information and make specific medication recommendations to you if you have these needs. Dr. Berger can do counseling and psychotherapy but does not directly provide medical care in Japan. He can help guide and recommend any psychiatric medicines with the physicians affiliated with his practice.
